We find that we can see more birds with our ears than we can with our ears. We can hear birds that are behind us, or hidden in the branches of a evergreen tree. We can hear birds in the dark, as anyone knows who has listed to a great horned owl at night. Knowing a few bird songs really opens up the world of birds to us. Winter is a good time to start learning birds' songs because there aren't so many voices to confuse the ear.
