Your Items Arrive on a Bed of Air
Since we opened our virtual doors in 2001, we’ve used
polystyrene peanuts as our packing material of choice. They provide a
void fill that’s relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Unfortunately,
heavy objects—like just about everything we sell!—tend to crush the peanuts
to smithereens so that they don’t provide much protection. (Fortunately,
those heavy objects we sell are pretty rugged, so most items arrived intact,
even if the shipping carton looked like it’d been dragged behind the truck
for the last several miles.) Also, the peanuts often develop a static charge
that makes it difficult to pick up all the polystyrene bits and throw them
away. (Because they’re so badly crushed in most cases, they can’t be
reused.)
Over the years, we’ve investigated numerous
alternatives to foam peanuts. We recently switched to a new system of
heavy-duty bubble wrap. This provides much better cushioning, so your
purchases should arrive in pristine condition. There’s an environmental
benefit too: You end up with reusable bubble wrap instead of a boxful of
flattened, non-biodegradable polystyrene bits that’ll end up in a landfill.
