14kt. gold Victorian locket with stag and diamond cross
Victorian yellow gold locket embossed with a proud stag. Above the stags head is cross set with 6 rose cut diamonds. Beneath the stag is an oak branch with acorns; a Victorian symbol for long life and strength.To Christians, the white stag has come to symbolize Christ, perhaps in part inspired by the St. Eustace legend, wherein the Roman soldier Eustace is hunting, and happens upon a deer with a cross between his antlers. Eustace converts on the spot, and is put through numerous tragedies, persecutions, etc., including the death of his family, until being miraculously reunited with them.Dimensions: diameter is 2.2 cm or approx. 3/4 inch, length of chain is 24 inches. Stunning Victorian garnet fringe necklace
This one of a kind garnet necklace was made for the French market around the turn of the century. The French market was an especially demanding one! Jewelry designed for the Parisian market had to be unique, beautiful and of the finest quality.Each link of this stunning necklace is articulated, ensuring that it lays perfectly around the necklace.Note that there are 2 alternating styles of “lines” making up the necklace; one line of 3 garnets, then a line of 2 garnets. The back part of the photo, as you can see from the necklace, is a straight line of garnets. I suspect this was done because otherwise, the necklace would have been uncomfortable to wear and probably would not have laid correctly around the neck.The necklace has a makers mark on the clasp, “HG” as well as “DEP” on the tongue. DEP is an abbreviation for “depose”, which indicates that the necklace was imported into France and sold there. From about 1700 onwards, any jewelry sold in France, but not made there, had to be marked “depose or DEP”. Setting is a low karat rose gold, known as “garnet gold”.Dimensions: 1.8 cm at widest point, approx. 6/8 inch; length is 41.2 cm or approx. 16.25 inchesCondition: excellent; no damage or restoration; all stones originalReference number: 9371Price: $1595 SOLD .gallery { margin: auto; } .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } .gallery img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; }
