On November 15, Trinity International Auctions will hold its largest auction in at the Stamford, Connecticut and on the web including almost 350 art objects.  The auction will include art spanning almost 600 years; from a beautifully toned etching by Lucas van Leyden dated 1510 to works by Pop artist James Rosenquist and Outsider artist Reverend Howard Finster from the 1980’s.  There is a strong representation of early and mid 20th Century Russian works, as well as a significant number of early and mid 20th century American paintings.  A small group of old master prints by van Leyden, Aldegrever, van Ostade and Rembrandt and another of drawings by Goncharova, Rodchenko and Sofronova from the era of the Russian Revolution could fairly document turning points in art history. It is thrilling to consider the works of Russian artists from the early twentieth century: from the short time when avant-garde artists were regarded as valuable transmitters of the social and political agenda.  Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) and Mikhail Larianov (1881-1964) together pioneered an art that looked beyond the conventions of academic painting to the style of folk art design and decoration.  From their concentration on rural subjects: bold, flat colors and simplified motifs, their work soon traversed Fauvism, Italian Futurism and Constructivism.  The two Constructivist inspired drawings by Natalia Goncharova in this auction date from after she moved to Paris in 1921 and was creating her most celebrated works: sets and costumes for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.  Both drawings convey a sense of monumentality with the absolute minimum of line and color.  In both, the entire field is comprised of a very few colored pencil lines making right angles and arcs that combine to suggest majestic sculptural female figures. The monumental scale of Goncharova’s female figures parallels the prominence women artists were accorded in the Russian Revolution.  Among them, Antonina Sofronova (1892-1966) is also represented in this auction by a pristine abstract composition dating from the same period.  At no other time had women artists worked equally with their male counterparts.  In no other region of the Western world had women been given access to the art establishment, indeed, few female artists garnered any recognition at all in the early twentieth century. The emergence and support of Russian women artists during and after the Revolution was unprecedented in the history of art, indeed women did not regained that status until the last twenty years.  However, male artists such as Goncharova’s partner Larianov, Malevich, Tatlin, and Alexander Rodchenko also broke new ground in the evolution of a dynamic non-objective art.  Few were more innovative than photographer, sculptor, designer and painter Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956); represented here by a typically dynamic Constructivist watercolor of a crescent shot through with transparent washes of intersecting and overlapping wedges, vectors and arcs in washes of blues and browns.  Against the a backdrop of rising political tension, European artists in the early Twentieth Century traveled frequently between countries transmitting, absorbing, and evolving ideas about theories, styles and ideologies.  These new concepts were as diverse as primitivism, anarchism, Futurism, psychoanalysis, Fauvism, and eventually Surrealism.  Manifestos were written, brawls, and rallies were attended, broadsides were printed, articles published, exhibitions, concerts, poetry recitals were staged.  In one way or another, all happily declared that old art was dead and new art was rising from its ashes.  However, for all of its bravado, this art often referred back as much as it was plunging forward. In art capitols of the Western Europe waves of new ideologies were challenging the hegemony of the Academy in reaction to the reality and economy of the camera and the speed of motion pictures, automobiles, mass production, new materialism, and urban life.  Many of the works in this auction reflect that bubbling cauldron of anxiety and exhilaration amid revolution, social upheaval and war. Numbers of artists left their native countries because of this upheaval and in some cases, like that of Pincus Kremegne (b 1890-1981) because of outright persecution.  David Burliuk (1882-1967) who moved first to France and then to the U.S., holds a prominent place in the history of avant-garde in Eastern and Western Europe.  In fact, he and his brother, Vladimir (1886-1916) worked with Goncharova and Larionov to bring about a style inspired by Russian peasant culture and crafts.  David, and to a lesser extent his brothers Vladimir and Nikolai (1890-1920), also had an important role in creating a Russian variant of Futurism in 1911, in addition to participating in the first Blaue Reiter exhibition (1911) with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc.  The ten Burliuk paintings offered in this auction reflect the diversity of Burliuk’s production while simultaneously evincing the consistency of his style. Village Girl with a Red Horse, with its heavy impasto and emphatically saturated German Expressionist color speak to the artist’s early assimilation of Russian folk-art and culture.  While in Long Island Harbor the artist utilizes languid black brush strokes to define the shore and the pier while raking the sky with transparent diagonal, pale washes of pinks, yellows, greens and blues.  Here we see  Burliuk’s handling reflects the landscape of his new home combined with the early influence of Goncharova’s Neo-Primitivist work and of the early color experiments of Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter. Pincus Kremegne was born in Byelorussia, known as a sculptor, painter and lithographer,  Kremegne’s landscape shares the vigorous brushstroke and brilliant coloration with Berliuk.  The vibrant green foreground is daubed with sparkles of bright primaries while Cypress trees twist along the background.  Like Berliuk, he also fled Russia for France but Kremegne fled in 1912 to escape the pogroms.  He worked with fellow ex-patriots, Chaim Soutine and Michel Kikoine. Serge Poliakoff, (1906-1966) is represented by an abstract composition of interlocking blocks of secondary colors.  His influences can be traced to Robert Dulaunay and his theory of simultaneous contrasts, as well as by Byzantine painting, which served as a model for the structural scaffolding of his works.  Like Cezanne and other French Post-Impressionists he was interested in the compositional/structural possibilities of color. Poliakoff is best known for abstract works, such as Construction, that powerfully underscore the tension between the colored and constructed surface. Kim Britov (b 1925) is a founding member of the Vladimir School of Landscape Painting (located about 100 miles west of Moscow) whose ourvre is characterized by rural scenes, straightforward graphic structure, and especially rich saturated color.  The most outstanding feature of Towards the Spring (1990) a romantic vision of horse-drawn sleds, their heavily bundled occupants conversing before a rural village - is its use of cerulean blue in the sky and foreground played against the ochers, golds and reds of figures and structures in the middle ground.  This is another instance where, like Burliuk, the influence of Russian Folk art is evident in love of color, simple forms and idealized visions of agrarian life style. Trinity International Auctions is also offering the artwork of renowned academic artists.  Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817–1900), Aivazovsky was only twenty years old when he won his first medal for what were to become his trademark seascapes. He went on to garner many commissions and accolades from the Russian Navy, from royal courts as well from the foremost painters of the day.  Both Turner and Delacroix expressed deep admiration for his work.  His clearly Romantic seascapes reflect a genius with jewel-like luminous color. It has been said that after adopting European academic art standards the Russians did not assimilate that which is intrinsically Russian into their imagery until the late 1900s, however the paintings of Vladimir Donatovitch Orlovsky (18420-1914) and the sculptures Nikolai Lieberich (1826-1883) contradict that assumption.  Lieberich’a bronze sculpture represents a dramatic scene of two hunters encircled by their horses and hunting dogs while they crouch over a struggling wolf.   Orlovsky’s painting is of another uniquely Russian scene of a horse drawn sled poised at the edge of a field, the passenger seems to have stopped to light his pipe and reflect on the landscape before traveling on his way.  Both works hone in on unmistakably Russian subjects. The auction also offers two remarkable silver tray’s dating from the 18th century.   Both are heavily embossed with exhaustively detailed scenes; one of the harrowing parting of the Red Sea and the second of soldiers parting from their loved ones before they join the ranks marching off to battle.  The Parting of the Red Sea measures almost 38 inches across and within that space the silver smith as fit Moses with his arm outstretched bidding the seas to part, and the Israelites clustering around him on the bank above the waves, a tumult of the upturned horses and men of Pharaoh caught beneath the tidal wave, and God and angles directing the havoc below from on high.  Both of theses trays evince the highest degree of craftsmanship by giving mute metal the ability to relay the epic and immortal stories of mankind. Trinity has had the good fortunate to offer a small but beautiful selection of Old Master Prints.  As noted above, the earliest, a charming etching by Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533), is entitled The Milkmaid, is initialed and dated 1510 in the plate.  van Leyden is regarded as one of the finest engravers of all time and although his greatest influence was Dürer ,Vasari rated van Leyden’s skill above that of Dürer.  The Milkmaid is an astonishingly crisp impression of a farmhand and milkmaid tending to their cows.  One hundred years before Rembrandt Heinrich Aldegrever was born in 1502 in Paderborn and, because of the small size of his prints, is known as one of the  “Little Masters” of the German Renaissance.  According to the Getty Museum Aldegrever specialized in the optical effects of light and shadow, illustrated in the Self-Portrait included here.  There are three fine impressions by the Dutch genre painter and etcher Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) included, The Baker Blowing his Horn from 1664 is stamped on the back from the State Museum of Nurnberg, the Man and Women Conversing offers a glimpse of market day gossip in 1673, and Old Man with a Pointed Cap from 1640 is a wonderful character study of a wizened skeptic.  Cornelis Pieter Bega was a painting and etching student of van Ostade who also specialized in genre scenes of tavern scenes, domestic interiors, mothers and children, prostitutes and gamblers.  Bega is credited with showing more psychological insight into his characters than his master. Although it is not immediately apparent in the etching The Three Drinkers, there are not many hidden motives to portray in the minds of the three hapless drunks depicted here, there is only a wonderful dark impression of a finely rendered genre scene. Early to Mid-Twentieth Century Experiments and Traditions Octavio (Oreste) Cortazzo (1836-1910 ) was an Italian born painter and etcher who are known for his genre scenes and character studies. He studied art in Paris, under Bonnat, and frequently exhibited at the Paris Salons.  “A Gentleman Viewing a Broadside” is a beautifully detailed pen and ink drawing that aptly captures the attitude of a young 19th century dandy, his back to the viewer, legs astride, hand clasped behind his back and holding a walking stick as he reads a broadside advertising the latest event. The artist has flawlessly rendered all the trappings of a stylish young nobleman including a tri-cornered hat jauntily cocked to one side, satin breaches, an elaborately embroidered waistcoat, stockings and slippers.  This little drawing perfectly captures the artist’s mastery of his subject and materials. Vittrio Reggianini was born in Modena in 1858 and spent most of his career in Florence where he was a well-known member of a group of popular Florentine genre painters.  The small painting offered here, Lady with a Water Jug depicts a pretty young woman; striking in all white with just a turquoise scarf knotted at her neck, as she leans across a table of earthenware vessels to gossip with an unseen friend.  The white clad figure plus the repeated motif of earth-toned vessels is broken up by the additional counterpoint of a small blue clad foot appearing beneath the subjects hem. There are few artists who lived through the Belle Epoch who were not affected by both Impressionism and the Barbizon artists. Europeans constantly revised what it meant to capture the zeitgeist and make “art of the times” – and many Americans sought to make Impressionism fit the American experience of nature and day-to-day life.  France had set the art world on a trajectory toward defining what was modern and what was true that kept Paris at its base until 1950 and the inception of Abstract Expressionism in New York.  The American and European works described below can all be seen relation to the  innovations of late 19th century French art. Hugo Scheiber (1873-1950) was a Hungarian painter and draughtsman whose works was influenced by the style of the Vienna Secession. He is known for his expressive representations of the undersides of modern city life.  The Cabaret Dancer, with its darkly outlined ribbons of undulating fabric, is characteristic of his bold cloisonné style.  The contrast between the ruler straight limbs of the dancer and the fluid curls of fabric almost dissolve the illusion of representation entirely into an explosive abstract composition of line and color. Susan Eisendeck (1908-1998) was born in Danzig but lived most of her life in Paris.  She is best known for her paintings of women and children, flowers and clowns.  The classic Eisendeck painting is this auction describes a beach where two women contentedly sit under parasols.   Further down the beach two French flags fly prettily in the breeze. Large, quick brushstrokes and bright color describe the forms and underscore the theme of relaxation and beauty.   Another French Artists in the auction is Louis Valtat (1869-1952) who like many of the Impressionists, studied under Gustave Moreau and Jules Dupré, he later fell under the influence of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.  The intriguing Portrait of a Flapper from the Back is composed of a few fluid strokes and incisive lines on what appears to be a page from his calendar.  There are scribbled notes around the figure, that coupled with the looping pencil stroke and daubed watercolor brushstrokes, offer the viewer an intimate glimpse of the artists working process.  Andre Hambourg, also from Paris, painted much celebrated beach scenes and seascapes that share a sketch-like quality.  This carefree appearance, when executed by a master, allows the viewer to intuit an entire narrative from very few paint strokes. In Beach Scene with Crowded Pier a cluster of colorful pastel figures in the foreground on the beach leads the eye out to a miniscule gathering on the pier cutting into the ocean.  The group on the pier suggests that they may be watching for the arrival of the steamship just visible along the horizon or else they may be watching a sailing race in the water before them.  Edouard Cortes (1882-1969) was of Spanish and French parentage and achieved his greatest acclaim for expressive vignettes of Paris street life in the Belle Epoch which he began painting in 1901 and continued to paint throughout his life.  The auction includes one such street scene painted after the introduction of cars in around 1920.  The sun sits low on the horizon as cars flank a wide boulevard guiding pedestrians along cold wet sidewalks lit by red and yellow light of shop windows.  The artist mixes precise draftsmanship with glistening spatters of paint to elevate light to the primary subject of this composition. International Landscapes Leader, Benjamin Williams (1831-1923) was an Englishman whose landscapes of the English, Scots and Welch country owe a debt to Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in his use of intense of color and detail.   Sunset, Surrey is an atmospheric evocation of the effects of Surrey sunset that gilds a swath of landscape, turning leaves, trees, field and water golden below the fading craggy hills.   An equally beautiful landscape, On Conway, Near Wales is also included for sale in this auction. Most of England’s official wartime artist later turned to more peaceful subject matter. It can be said that Montague Dawson (1895-1973) is among them, however the painting Sailing in a Rough Sea can hardly be referred to as peaceful.  In Sailing in a Rough Sea a three masted square-rigger rides up a wave, water pouring from its gunnels.  The ship heads into the viewer silhouetted against a ‘greasy sky’.  The foreground is a masterfully painted roiling sapphire ocean. The effect is one of barely bridled violence. The American James Brade Sword (1839-1915) paints an entirely different kind of violence at sea.  Sword was a native of Philadelphia although he painted up and down the East Coast.  The wonderfully dramatic Untitled (c. 1880) painting in this auction represents a smoke spewing tug plowing up-river, pale green-gold water below and sky above.  Through yellow and gray smoke we can glimpse the masts of a square-rigger, and further in the distance the jagged, thin black line of an already industrialized harbor.  There is an ominous reddish hue to the smoke and the reflection on the water that suggests that the ship may be afire.  Margulies, Joseph (1896-1983) is known for his energetic brushwork and bright fauve is harbor scenes inspired by Rockport harbor, portraits and images of his beloved New York City.  This auction offers two portraits, one depicts a lone sitter in the grass bracketed by enormous trees that frame the rich and varied landscape beyond.  The other painting is a charming portrait of two tiny children. Stars of American Impressionism and Tonalism Dessar, Louis Paul (1867-1952)  studied in France in the 1880’s to be a portrait painter but was diverted to landscape by exposure to the Barbizon school.  Dessar was influential in evolving Tonalism the decidedly American style of painting rendering the landscape in soft light and shadows.  Returning from Pasture is a fine example of Dessar’s mature work where the forms gradually appear out of a heavy web of atmospheric haze.  Dessar reveals a farmer who has driven his ox cart to a small pool to drink.  In the diaphanous  veil of early morning light, the farmer, in profile facing the looming tangle of trees dominating the right of the canvas, has his hands together in prayer, seems to be making his morning devotions to nature.  Dwight William Tryon, (1849-1925) was a Hartford native and revered Tonalist who studied with Barbizon landscapists Charles Daubigny and Henri Harpignies before returning to New York to continue painting and to teach. ‘People think of atmosphere as somehow less real than the other facts of Nature,’  Tryon commented, ‘but to the painter it is simply a more subtle truth, which he can no more disregard than the rocks in his foreground’ (quoted in J. Pearce: American Painting, 1560–1913, New York, 1964, p. 47).  Tryon’s small painting, Autumn Sunset is redolent of the glow of ochre beach grass in the Fall heightened by a blue sky shot with the gold of reflected sun.  The painting is a perfect balance of rendering and sensory evocation. Henry Dearth, (1864-1918) collected Oriental and Near Eastern art he also made a number of paintings of the coast of Normandy and Long Island.  The strong horizontal composition and limited color range of In the Country are reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints. The artist palette is limited to a variety of blues and grays to describe a thin swath of land between the ominous blue gray sky and the placid blue river. The hard line of the horizontal bank and the vertical spire of the church amid the village in the middle ground direct the eye to the rich layers of clouds above.  Ranger, Henry (1858-1916) Woodpile in the Woods is another example of the Tonalist school. This painting retains the atmospheric haze that characterizes this style but employs larger, quicker, bolder strokes of paint to render a pile of wood flanked by thin leafless birches on a verge above a woodsy landscape in winter.  John Francis Murphy (1853-1921) employs much the same palette and similar subject but his season is spring and his brushstrokes are more delicate.  His brush sprinkles the glistening effects of new color in spring and contrasts it with the mass and soft textures of the boulders and warm earth below. Charles Melville Dewey (1849-1937) NA actually helped to paint the ceilings of the Louvre during his studies in France. Trinity is presenting a lovely twilit scene of livestock drinking at the edge of a stream. The painting, although loosely brushed in pastoral hues, gains a degree of sharp poetic gravitas from the brilliant jabs of white that catch the backs of the animals black backs and horns.  Emile Gruppe (1896-1978) is known for his paintings of fishing boats docked at Rockport and Gloucester.  There are two wonderful examples in this auction, The Bickford Floats and Unloading the Nets both clearly display Gruppe’s talent for rendering the transient effects of light on water alongside the sharp angles and strong colors of fishing boats. Leon Kroll (1884-1974) lived most of his life in between Rockport, Maine, New York City and Chicago.  He studied with J. H. Twachtman in New York and Jean Paul Laurens in Paris among others, and garnered almost every prestigious art award granted in the United States.  Kroll often depicted the landscape in Maine,  “I always use nature as a kind of abstract encyclopedia of fact.  I use parts and compose a picture.  And even while I’m creating in this space, I never copy nature…”. (Quoted in Nancy Hale and Fredson Bowers, editors, Leon Kroll: A Spoken Memoir (Charlottesville, Va.: University Press of Virginia, 1983), 106. As reprinted by the Columbus Museum).  Kroll did not copy nature in Riverside Drive, Building the Boat Basin, (1912), nor did he create evidence of an historic event – he arranged or composed a picture using components from the New York cityscape.  In the lower half of the painting his components are reduced to ciphers for ice flows, men and water.  This brevity works in concert with the architectural detail in the middle ground through the agency of pure color in the water in the foreground and in the sky above.  Winckworth Allen Gay (1821-1910) was one of the first American painters to come under the influence of the Barbizon painters and probably the first to live and paint in Japan.  Making the painting here Fujiyama, Japan dated 1877, his second trip to Japan, a very early rendering of an American’s view of Japan. In it Mount Fuji towers faintly in the background while the brilliant small passages of red and blue in the Japanese rice farmers clothing, stands out against the green watery fields in the foreground.  Henry Peters Gray (1819-1877) was one of the first presidents of the American National Academy.  The full extent of his talent is evident in this painting considered by some to be a representation of Ishmael and Hagar.   The oval painting depicts a classically clothed young woman on her knees and an undraped sleeping child along a sandy bank.  The woman stares down into the middle ground as if caught mid-thought; in her left hand she clutches a sheet as if in the process of covering the child.  The painting is remarkable for its Ingres-like crisp line and Pre-Raphaelite flaming russet tones as well as for the emotive content. John Costigan, (1889-1972) was largely self -taught, he worked for 22 years for a lithographer and then moved to a farm in upstate New York to raise his family and to paint.  The majority of his works are concerned with the pastoral or family scenes.  Both of his interests are represented in this auction; tucked into a sun soaked orange and red leafy grotto are a beatific mother and rosy cheeked babes with goats resting at their feet and in a charcoal and pencil drawing snow mounds up against farm buildings in the woods.  The artists incisive use the sides and edges of the charcoal add to the sense of the cruelty of the bitter cold. Maurice Braun (1877-1941) moved from Hungary to New York with his family in 1881.  In 1910, after art school, a year studying with William Merritt Chase and a year traveling in Europe, he moved to San Diego at which time he turned all of his attention to landscape painting.  Two Braun paintings included in this auction are typical of his wonderful paint handling. In the first the eye follows a sinuous path down through the hills, over low-lying boulders and around new outcroppings of pink and pale lavender spring flowers – ultimately arriving at a darkened landscape that meets the bright horizon.  The second painting could be a pendant to the first; with its rich autumnal colors and bold forms the landscape reveals the artists sensitivity to the subtleties of the natural world around us. This is only a smattering of the hundreds of fine objects in this auction.  Visit Trinity’s website to view a complete catalogue, get directions, get conditions of sale or phone the numbers listed below.
