Why Photography?
I spent the first month of my life in an incubator. Viewing the world
from behind the glass of a one person sauna, I experienced it as a voyeur,
watching from the warm glass womb as nurses cooed above. Now I watch behind
a glass lens to share the experience with you.
Life is full of wonderful serendipities. Take this one for example
-- I had gone out onto the back porch one summer morning... the prior
day's air had cooled, and several drops of water had formed on the spider
plant, clinging to the underside of its leaves. Each one, rounded belly
full, appeared to hang by a tiny filament. The sun reflected off, and
through each wet crystal. The moment of morning dew was fleeting; within
minutes the sun's warmth would whisk away its moisture.
Because the photographer is keenly aware that a moment experiences birth
and death simultaneously, s/he is compelled to capture this instant to
share it with others.
America
the Beautiful
On September 11, 2001, thousands of lives were lost, hundreds of them brave souls who died
in rescue efforts. This tragedy touched the lives of thousands more who knew them
-- family, friends, love ones. An entire nation was deeply affected; work came to a halt
as people walked around in a daze for weeks afterwards, grappling with the incomprehensible.
In the wake of these events, many of us re-examined what we thought was "important",
renewing ties to community, and reaching
out to loved ones and those in need. Our Remembering 9/11 page
is a gallery of moments, faces, and heroes of the September 11 tragedy, put together
from several news and media sources.
