Skateboards Skateboards, Complete, and Decks Welcome to berserkskateboards.com. Skateboarding is one of the most popular sports of today. Men, women and children of all ages are skateboarders. In fact, there are complete clothing lines and shoe fashion lines that are devoted to skateboarding. The sport itself boasts waves of talented professionals and amateurs that compete in competitions and games around the world. The sport of skateboarding was invented in the 1950s in California. The idea began as a ground-based way for surfers to keep their skills up to date when the surfing was bad. By attaching some roller-skate wheels onto a board, the skateboard was born. The popularity of these ground-based surf boards grew so quickly that a company called Makaha began to produce them exclusively. From the time that Makaha began producing skateboards; the sport’s popularity began to grow. In fact, skateboarding grew so much that it quickly became a national phenomenon. Soon there were international competitions, specialty magazines and fashion lines. By the late 1960s, the sport of skateboarding had practically disappeared off of the world’s radar. It vanished as quickly as it had arrived and many people began to write skateboarding off as a fad. Luckily, there were a few niche groups that continued developing the sport to keep it from falling off the radar completely. In the late 1970s, the popularity of skateboarding was once again on the rise. Larry Stevenson invented the kicktail – a raised back that gave riders the ability to lift the front wheels and make rapid turns. Skateboarding began to separate from the coasting style of surfing, becoming its own independent sport. During this same time, Southern California was experiencing a severe draught. This is the time that skating groups began to immerge. One of the most popular skateboarding groups was known as the Z Boys. Taking advantage of empty pools, the Z boys used the pool-walls as ramps to hurdle themselves at great speeds. These feats attracted much media attention and the Z Boys became the first celebrities of skateboarding. All over the country, kids wanted to drain their pools and become a professional skateboarder. In the 80s, pro-skater Rodney Mullen further revolutionized the sport by inventing the kick-flip. By simultaneously stomping on the kick tail and jumping forward, he was able to become air-born without using a ramp and flip his board around. Before then, a no-handed aerial was unheard of. To his credit, Mullen invented over 30 tricks which helped shape the world of modern skateboarding. These street tricks appealed to the kids who didn’t have access to empty swimming pools or large vert-ramps.
